ELECTROMAGNETIC WORKING GROUP plan of activity for 2009 and milestones for 2010-1012 ======================================================

(1) - June 2009 (2) - December 2009 [LE] - in collaboration with the Low-energy EM working group [GT] - in collaboration with the Geometry and Transport working group [RE] - in collaboration with the Run, Event and Detector Response working group


1) Validation and verification of EM physics [LE]:

  • detailed comparison of Standard, Livermore and Penelope models; (1)
  • adding extra tests on ion stopping powers and straggling; (1)
  • adding tests on vertex detector simulation; (2 CERN summer student)
  • adding extra automatic tests on scattering; (2)

2) Material category development [LE]:

  • adding extra data for ion stopping powers; (1)
  • review on ionisation potentials; (2)
  • review on density effect parameterizations; (2)
  • introduce variable density; (2)

3) EM infrastructure update [LE]:

  • introduce general charge exchange process for ion transport; (1)
  • introduce Physics Lists with combinations of Standard and Low-energy models; (1)
  • further improvement of the spline for Physics Vectors; (2)
  • introduce “Apply Cuts” option per geometry region; (2?)
  • introduce cut in range for recoil; (2)

4) Further update of ionization processes [LE]:

  • enable the ICRU’73 based ion ionisation model for Physics Lists; (1)
  • tuned model of fluctuations for ions; (2)

5) Further development of the processes of multiple and single scattering [LE][GT]:

  • muon multiple scattering model development in Physics List; (1)
  • development of Goudsmit-Saunderson model; (1)
  • establish more stable and effective interface to compute safety and geometry step; (2)
  • establish more effective sampling of displacement; (2)
  • hadron multiple scattering coherent with hadron diffuse model; (2)
  • feasibility study on Penelope MSC implementation; (2)

6) Bremsstrahlung models [LE]:

  • updated model for e+- for moderate energies E
